The Trump phenomenon's most illuminating and distinctive moments – not its most crucial, nor most harsh, nor most hazardous, nor most foolish, but possibly its most revealing – came earlier this autumn. Over the span of several weeks, the American president commenced revealing everyone his intentions for a gilded ballroom double the dimensions compared to the White House and subsequently started unilaterally ripping down the East Wing to erect it.
He has committed acts ten thousand times worse – the present calculation of deaths resulting from his reductions to USAID is 600,000 and rising, and recently a study forecast his petroleum strategies would result in fatalities 1.3 million more. Yet nothing as characteristic. No previous president would have dared – really, no other president would have conceived – independently wrecking major areas of the executive mansion to construct a Versailles-style party room, with the enthusiastic participation of some of the nation's most affluent, nearly all of which have business with the government.

As disorienting as it is to observe the chief executive seek to颠覆 the established notion of democracy and replace it with its complete opposite, there remains a substantial portion of Americans who should not find it completely novel. This includes individuals like us – within elder demographics almost a majority – who were educated within mainstream Protestant traditions.
We have watched over the years as politically conservative religious groups transformed the Christ we were raised with into exactly the opposite of who we understood him to be. Essentially, they converted a persona of compassion into a symbol of hostility who approves specifically the brutality that he denounced in scripture; this change developed at a slower pace, across decades rather than months, yet it remains disconcerting via comparable methods, a confusing personal impact for many of us.
A Harmful Christianity Gains Ground
Therefore allow me to outline the Savior that I grew up with, since in theory Christ is the focus of any Christian faith, and because the fastest-growing cadre among Americans could have minimal awareness of him since they are skeptics or uncertain individuals or religiously unaffiliated. I have no problem with these different approaches, nor with any other faith; but I do think that there are pearls of great price within Christian narrative.
It is emphatically not the story of a mighty king arising; conversely, an infant arrives to homeless parents in an automotive shelter, who must quickly flee to a different country to avoid covert authorities. The infant develops in humble circumstances, a laboring woodworker; his teaching concerns compassion for fellow humans, particularly for the disadvantaged – and not a sentimental love, but tangible care, shown by providing food and protecting. Jesus' answer to aggression is to turn the other cheek – not as a demonstration of compliant endurance, but as a means to instruct the attacker; his approach to wrongdoing is that if someone steals your outer garment you must offer the person your additional clothing too.
The apparent and direct reality that the Jesus of the gospels calls for a kind of radical love centered on the impoverished has perpetually caused the Christian faith something of a controversial faith: appealing to the populace, but owing to its natural unconventionality needing to be restrained. During the 1950s it was contained through watering down – Protestant Christianity was so widespread that it essentially sanctified existing conditions.
A Struggle for the Highest Within Us
So I have been encouraged to witness the determined opposition against Trump emerge during the previous year. It has served as substantial consolation to help build the campaign that has taken to the streets via continuous gatherings, and seems to have inspired electorate to participate in significant amounts during minor elections. We must have to maintain it, and with identical determination, with American flags throughout each rally and appeals to the best parts within national heritage.
We shall be interrogated ... how did you receive the foreigner? Did you receive him and welcome him or refuse?
America is best defended, in other words, through connection to the finest in US heritage, just as Christianity is most protected by relationship to that which renders it special and magnificent, specifically the model of Christ.
