No fewer than thirteen individuals killed and 98 hurt in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the pace and execution of the country's major government projects.

The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.

“We are going to rigorously clarify what caused this accident,” stated the country's president.

The official announced that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The leader noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Major Initiative of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the previous administration, whose presidency ended the year before. This rail line was closely associated with his government's economic vision for the southern region.

Another massive train initiative from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to kickstart the economy of a comparatively poorer part of the country.

Building Management and Safety Concerns

The development of both rail lines was supervised by the armed forces, marking a dramatic increase of its role in national projects. They were built at an fast-tracked pace, surpassing predictions to be at least partly opened before the end of that presidency.

However, this accelerated timeline had also sparked persistent concerns over safety standards.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This involves an earlier collision this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had two non-lethal derailments.

Calls for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a key rival party called for an immediate halt in the development and management of all such projects.

This stoppage was requested pending a thorough independent investigation. The party declared that the situation "demands prompt explanations."

In response, the president asserted that the train had been operating in total compliance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the development and operation of these strategic initiatives.
